A 45-year-old Mexico man is in a Columbia hospital after he is shot by a homeowner in New Florence early Thursday morning.
New Florence Police Chief David Ingle says the man allegedly tried to steal a vehicle from the 200 block of Picnic Street in New Florence at about 3:10 a.m. and was interrupted by the owner. Ingle says the owner shot at the suspect at least nine times.
A while later, Montgomery County Sheriff officials say deputies located Dennis McClain behind the Dollar General store in Montgomery City suffering from a gunshot wound. Montgomery Sheriff officials also confirm McClain is the suspect in the attempted vehicle theft.
He was taken to an area hospital for treatment and there is no word on his condition as of Thursday afternoon. While McClain was in Montgomery County allegedly committing this crime, U.S. Marshall’s were in Mexico and, with the assistance of Mexico Public Safety officers, searched for McClain at a home in the 900 block of west Monroe Street.
While searching, they learned he had allegedly been involved in the Montgomery County incident.
