An area of the Mexico downtown business district was without power for about an hour-and-a-half late Friday morning into the early afternoon. According to area businesses we checked with, the power outage affected the Downtown Mexico Square, Jackson Street, West Plaza and the area of Monroe Street. A downed power line and a sparking transformer were found by responding Mexico Public Safety officers along Washington Street in between Promenade and Liberty at about 11:30 Friday morning. Crews restored power at about 12:15 Friday afternoon. The power line fell in the block of south Washington between Promenade and East Liberty streets. Ameren Missouri officials say about 1,200 customers were affected. They say a substation malfunction caused the outage and are looking into whether the downed power line was caused by the malfunction.
