Some kids are dreading the first day of school – but there are about 1,800 students in Audrain County who are looking forward to it. These are the students who qualify for free or reduced lunches.
However, for many of these students, they go hungry over the weekend. The Food Bank helps mitigate this problem with the Buddy Pack program, which gives kids backpacks filled with nutritious snacks to take home.
Unfortunately, this year’s budget has been severely slashed, so only 64 students will be able to participate.
The cost of a Buddy Pack is $180 per school year or $15 per month and citizens are being asked to search their hearts and help these children by sponsoring a Buddy Pack for a child.
On Friday, August 17th, there will be an “Adopt a Buddy All-Stars Gala” at the Audrain 4-H Center to help raise funds. The social hour begins at 6:00 p.m., and the program starts at 7:00 p.m.
There are a variety of sponsorship levels and the committee invites residents to choose a sponsorship level and help change a child’s life. All money raised and food collected stays in Audrain County and donations are tax deductible. For more information on the fundraising gala, please call the Mexico Area Chamber of Commerce at 581-2765, or the First Presbyterian Church at 581-5689. Checks or donations can be made payable to “Adopt a Buddy” and mailed to Commerce Bank, 2946 S. Clark, Mexico, MO 65265.
