Improper disposal of smoking material was the apparent cause of a fire at the Mexico Animal Shelter last week according to a press release from Mexico Public Safety sent out on Thursday, December 21, 2023.
Mexico Public Safety responded to fire on Thursday, December 14, 2023, and said the fire was quickly extinguished but spread to the attic, damaging some of the structure and utilities.
There were no injuries to any people or animals.
The City of Mexico has been working with its insurance company to determine the best way to get shelter services started again.
Mexico Community Development has been working with local organizations on the continued care of the animals.
At this time, all of the cats have been re-homed but there are still about 10 dogs that need to find a home.
