Columbia firefighters responded to a structure fire early Saturday morning in the 1300 block of Vandiver Drive. Around 1:23 a.m crews were dispatched and saw heavy smoke and fire coming from a two-story residence, upon arrival.
They attempted to breach the house but were called back outside as worsening fire conditions made it unsafe inside the house. The integrity of the structure’s first floor and roof had weakened, leaving the building unsafe.
Firefighters worked the scene in frigid conditions, with ice forming on equipment and personnel, according to a news release.
The fire was brought under control within 40 minutes.
The five adults living in the house all escaped without harm.
Columbia Fire Marshals and Columbia Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
