Michael Timmons charged in death of child

A second person has been charged in connection with the death of a child in Randolph County in January 2026.

Yesterday (Thursday) prosecutors charged Michael S. Timmons with five counts of First Degree Endangering Welfare of Child Creating Substantial Risk.
He is the second person charged in the case, after authorities were called to a rural Randolph County home in mid-January for a report of a child with a gunshot wound. Prosecutors charged 37-year-old Jo M. Timmons with one count of First Degree Endangering Welfare of Child – Death of Child and four counts of First Degree Endangering Welfare of Child Creating Substantial Risk back in January.

According to Court documents, five children, ranging in ages from 7-12, were at the home alone while their mother had left to pick up her paycheck.

After seeing an unknown vehicle coming up the driveway, the kids hid in a bedroom. One child then took a gun from a dresser and the weapon discharged, hitting an 11-year-old sibling and killing them.

At the time of the shooting Deputies reported a strong smell of urine and feces as well as a large infestation of cockroaches in the home.

Michael Timmons had been in North Carolina at the time of the shooting.
