Columbia Man Sentenced in 2023 Overdose Death

A Columbia man has been sentenced to ten years in prison in connection to a fatal overdose three years ago.

Chase Austin Rieves pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and delivery of a controlled substance after an incident in 2023 when authorities found a man dead in a home with blue powder next to him, later identified as fentanyl.

Upon searching the deceased man’s phone, they found a Venmo transfer to Rieves as well as a text saying, “I forgot to tell you those are really strong so be careful”.

Rieves was given ten years’ prison time for each of his two charges, with the sentences to run simulaneously.
