Missouri is looking to nuclear power as energy demand continues to grow across the state.
The Callaway Energy Center near Fulton currently provides about 15% of Missouri’s electricity, but state leaders are exploring whether the site could support future expansion.
Governor Mike Kehoe created the Advanced Nuclear Energy Task Force to study ways to grow nuclear power, including the possibility of adding another reactor in Callaway County.
Supporters say nuclear energy could help meet rising demand from manufacturing, electric vehicles, and new data centers while providing reliable, carbon-free power.
But experts say expanding nuclear power will come with major challenges, including billions of dollars in construction costs, workforce shortages, and rebuilding the industry’s ability to build new plants after decades of limited construction.
Officials say the existing Callaway site could be a strong candidate because of its connection to the power grid, access to water, and experienced workforce.
The task force will now look at the funding, infrastructure, and policies needed to make a new generation of nuclear power possible in Missouri.
