ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that Second Baseman JJ Wetherholt has agreed to extend his stay in St. Louis.
Reports say that the deal is worth $112.5 million, which will also buy out multiple years of free agency.
Wetherholt is having a fine rookie year with the Cardinals batting .267/.362/.411 (BA/OBP/SLG) while adding 13 home runs and 9 stolen bases.
Wetherholt also leads all rookies in Wins Above Replacement (3.6) and all MLB Second Basemen in Outs Above Average on defense (16).
He will be a building block for the Cardinals’ young roster going forward, as he has taken over leadoff and second base duties since opening day and never looked back.
