Columbia Police Discuss Downtown Safety

Columbia police and downtown bar and nightlife managers met Wednesday to discuss public safety following several violent incidents in the area.

The meeting focused on improving communication between police and businesses, as well as communication among businesses when safety concerns arise.

Police Chief Jill Schlude says the goal is a safe and welcoming downtown. The meeting comes after a shots-fired incident near Ninth and Walnut Streets in August and a fight in July.

Officials also say the newly approved public safety sales tax could provide funding to address downtown safety concerns. The department plans to continue working with nightlife businesses and other community partners.
