Columbia City Council members have imposed a one-percent sales tax dedicated to public safety, following voter approval in August.
The tax is expected to generate about 38 million dollars in 2027, with revenue projected to increase by one percent each year.
The city’s 10-year plan calls for hiring 42 additional firefighters and 50 police officers, along with funding for a new police headquarters, two fire stations and renovations to existing stations.
The tax takes effect January first.
Council members also approved changes to sewer rates and downtown parking fees.
