Boone County officials will have to find another way to address jail overcrowding after voters rejected Proposition L.
The measure would have created a three-eighths-cent sales tax for 15 years to pay for a new jail.
Sheriff Dwayne Carey says the county currently has 457 people in custody, despite having space for just 246.
The county estimates it could spend about four-and-a-half million dollars this year housing inmates elsewhere.
Officials now face the challenge of finding a solution without the proposed tax.
