MEXICO HIGH SCHOOL ONLY TEAM NOT TO SWEEP IN BOYS-GIRLS ACTION

Mexico High School hosted the 12th Annual Gary Filbert Classic (Saturday) tonight at the Mexico Sports Plex. Fourteen teams competed in a daylong event that saw seven games with action beginning at 10am.

In the first contest, the Van-Far Lady Indians held off Paris, 35-26.

The 11:45 game featured Van-Far and Paris in boys’ action. The Indians again won, behind a decided height advantage, 59-33. The win gave Van-Far a double-header sweep.

The North Callaway Lady Thunderbirds won the third game of the day 45-43, in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score might indicate. The Community R-6 ladies were down eight in the final minutes before stringing together a late run to keep it close.

In the fourth game, the North Callaway boys gained another double header sweep as they defeated the R-6 boys in a runaway, 69-47.

The 5pm tipoff featured Harrisburg and Elsberry in boys’ action. The Bulldogs scratched out a 71-56 win over a scrappy Elsberry ballclub.

The Harrisburg Lady Dawgs then earned the third double-header sweep of the day with a 47-23 trouncing of the host Mexico Lady Bulldogs, 47-23. (see separate story)
