Severe Thunderstorms have been rumbling across the listening area throughout the afternoon. Storms that rolled through Columbia and Mexico earlier today contained nickel to quarter size hail.
Earlier in the day, Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe signed an executive order to activate the Missouri State Emergency Operations Plan. That helps state agencies coordinate directly with local jurisdictions and thereby speeds up needed assistance.
The Boone County Office of Emergency Management also issued an alert ahead of possible severe storms this afternoon and evening.
Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, and to stay aware of any watches or warnings in effect. Also, it is always a good idea to identify a safe shelter location, if needed.
The City of Auxvasse opened up a storm shelter today, due to possible severe weather. The city announced that Grand Prairie Baptist Church, located at 104 N. Main, is open for public use, if needed.
City officials are monitoring the weather conditions closely, and if the shelter does open, a notice will be posted on the City of Auxvasse and City of Auxvasse Park Board Facebook pages.
Mexico High School will host the Class 5, District 4 Academic Team District Championship this weekend.
MHS Academic Team Coach Dale Schenewerk, who oversaw last years team that finished third in the country, says Mexico has another strong team again this season.

That two-vehicle accident that shut down Highway 54 in Callaway County on Wednesday, turned out to be fatal.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol says a 2008 Ford Fusion collided with a southbound semi grain truck at County Road 2002 around 11:55 a.m. The car overturned, and the truck’s trailer spilled a load of grain across the highway.
The driver of the Ford, a 91-year-old man from Fulton, was taken to University Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after 1 p.m.
His passenger, a 67-year-old man from Auxvasse, was hospitalized with moderate injuries.
Over 2,000 Missouri electric customers were reportedly without power last night after strong storms moved through the area.
Maries County had a tornado warning and an actual tornado hit the Clinton area last night.
Over 800 of those customers without power were located in Cole County. Most of those had power restored by early this morning.
Mexico had a brief outage as Ameren customers found they had no electricity shortly after 7:35am, with power restored about 8:05am.
As part of the America 250 celebration to highlight this country’s 250th birthday, the Audrain County Historical Society is hosting “The American Soldier & The Revolutionary War” tonight at the Audrain County Museum.
David Maupin will give the presentation on this historical event. Maupin is heavily involved, and has been for years, in the Society’s Walk Back in Time.
Tongiht’s presentation is free and open to the public. It gets underway at 7pm.
Fire crews in Mexico were called out late Tuesday night to a vehicle fire on the 3400 block of South Clark.
Responding personnel found A 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer was found fully engulfed in flames, with fire spreading from the interior to the engine area.
The driver told investigators she’d noticed a hot smell in recent days and saw smoke and flames under the dashboard while driving from Fulton to Paris.
She was able to pull over and get herself and her pets out safely.
The SUV was a total loss, but no one was hurt.
A Mexico woman was seriously hurt Tuesday night after a crash on Business 54.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol says it happened around 7:25 p.m., east of Spire Lane, when a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe went off the right side of the road.
The SUV then hit a curb, a John Deere lawn tractor, a MoDOT sign, and then a building.
Troopers say the 33-year-old driver from Mexico was not wearing a seat belt and was taken by Audrain County EMS to University Hospital in Columbia.
The vehicle was totaled and towed from the scene.
A Mexico man that suffered a traumatic brain injury in an April 1st crash, was charged Friday with DWI – Serious Physical Injury and a misdemeanor charge of Operating a Motor Vehicle in a Careless and Imprudent Manner, Involving an Accident.
William Ray Johnson was driving a 2015 Cadillac SUV southbound in the 4800 block of South Clark Street in Mexico when he attempted to pass a vehicle on the shoulder, failed to make a curve and drove off the right side of the roadway.
The Cadillac then struck a culvert and flipped end-over-end before coming to a rest on its roof.
Witnesses said the Cadillac had been speeding before the crash and court documents state that when officers made contact with the driver and the passenger of the vehicle, they noticed a strong smell of marijuana.
The passenger suffered a spinal fracture, orbital fracture, and a rib injury in the accident.

A 31-year-old Mexico man suffered moderate injuries in a two-vehicle crash Friday night in Audrain County. The accident happened about 8:35pm on Highway 22 at Route NN.
Both cars were eastbound on Hwy 22 when the man, driving a 2012 Chevrolet Captiva, attempted a left turn onto NN and was struck by a 2018 Ford F250 driven by a 66-year-old Mexico man. The 66-year-old had minor injuries.
Both men were taken by Audrain Ambulance to University Hospital in Columbia.

Missouri Military Academy responded today to allegations made in a lawsuit filed late Wednesday in Audrain County Court, as false.
The lawsuit accuses the school of negligence in the supervision of cadets. Court documents filed by the plaintiff claimed a a 12-year-old cadet was repeatedly sexually assaulted over multiple nights inside his dorm room, while the child cried out and banged on the walls for help.
The petition details what it claims as a broader pattern of reported violence, hazing, and sexual misconduct.
MMA denied the allegations in a Friday statement sent to Country 96 News, saying “the safety and well-being of our cadets are our highest priorities. The allegations in the lawsuit are unsubstantiated and without merit.”
