The Mexico Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season with a 21-14 victory on the road against the Marshall Owls on Friday night.
The Bulldogs would get the only score of the first half, it came in the second quarter.
The score was set up when Bulldogs quarterback Charlie Fisher found Shantez Dorsey on a 34 yard pass, Dorsey went out of bounds at the one-yard line.
The next play Drew DeMint ran the ball into the end zone. Mexico would miss the extra point and the Bulldogs had their first lead of the season at 6-0.
The second half did not start off the way Mexico wanted. Marshall recovered an onside kick on the first play of the third quarter.
The Owls would score on a Jaxon Case rushing touchdown. The extra point was good and Marshall lead 7-6.
The Owls would score again in the third quarter on another Jaxon Case rush this time for 35-yards into the end zone, and it was Marshall 14-6.
Mexico would tie the ball game early in the 4th quarter.
Markus “PJ” Perkins caught fire with a 28-yard rush, then Charlie Fisher took to the air again and connected with Perkins for a 40-yard touchdown. The Bulldogs two-point conversion was good and Mexico led 21-14 with 6:44 left in the game.
The Bulldogs defense kept Marshall from scoring for the remainder of the fourth quarter to notch the win.
Mexico’s defense came up big with two interceptions in the game one from Ashton Belcher and one from Korbyn Doresey and a fumble recovery by Hunter Cuno.
Dante Cline had three sacks.
Charlie Fisher finished the game with 112 passing yards and a touchdown. Markus Perkins was the Bulldogs lead rusher with 61 yards, followed by Peyton Hoover with 41 yards on the ground, and Drew Demint with a solid 31 yards rushing and a touchdown.
Shantez Dorsey had 72 receiving yards, and Markus Perkins had 40 receiving yards.
Mexico improves to 1-3 on the season and 1-0 in the North Central Missouri Conference.
Up next Mexico is at home on Friday, September 22 for a game against the Hannibal Pirates.
