Former Callaway County Sheriff Clay Chism Enters Plea In DWI Case

Former Callaway County Sheriff Clay Chism entered a guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated on Thursday, December 14, 2023.

Chism was arrested in October 2022 after he was accused of crashing into a concrete barrier at an Arby’s parking lot in Moberly.

Chism’s attorney recommends Chism’s second charge of resisting arrest be dismissed.

It also recommends Chism’s sentence is suspended and two years of unsupervised probation.

Randolph County prosecuting attorney Stephanie Luntsford said Chism’s pleas has not yet been accepted by the judge, nor has Chism been sentenced.

Luntsford said the plea could be accepted during an already scheduled pre-trial conference on Monday, or sooner.

Chism’s peace officer license was suspended in June.

Soon after, the Callaway County prosecuting attorney filed a petition to remove Chism from elected office.

Callaway County chief deputy Darryl Maylee has served as interim sheriff since June.
