The Mexico High School Academic Team reached another season milestone over the weekend as they won their second home tournament of season at the 8th annual Bulldog Regional Interscholastic Competition held at the Mexico Middle School on Saturday, March 9, 2024.
The Bulldogs swept the field again, going 10-0 and their win-streak hit exactly 100 since they last lost their 2nd game of the season against Lindbergh at the Mizzou Fall Academic Tournament in mid October.
Head coach Dale Schenewerk reports Mexico A defeated Owensville 440 – 50 in round 1, Kirksville B 635 – 20 in Round 2, North Shelby 610 – 90 in Round 3, Keytesville 440 – 30 in Round 4 and Tolton Catholic, a new district rival 535 – 85 in round 5.
Through the first 5 preliminary games, once again Camden Williams was the tournament’s top scorer with 42 powers and 29 gets for 184 points per game, which was more than double the next best player’s points per game.
Mexico B went 3 – 2 in the preliminary rounds, defeating Palmyra 185 – 70, Hermann B 180 – 80, and Fulton A 220 – 80 with the losses coming at the hands of Columbia Independent 370 – 70 and Montgomery County 155 – 125.
Senior Liam Hoyle led the way for Mexico B in the preliminary rounds with 2 powers and 10 gets for 26 points per game.
Mexico C dropped all 5 preliminary rounds but played well, falling to Eugene (185 – 130), New Haven (215 – 90), Hannibal A (190 – 50), Kirksville A (390 – 70) and Hallsville B (150 – 100).
Hunter Feger led the way in the preliminary rounds for Mexico C, with 2 powers and 12 gets, good for 30 points per game.
Round 6 saw Mexico A put on a clinic, defeating Eugene 665 – 10 to begin playoff play.
Mexico B lost a tough one to North Shelby 140 – 120, while Mexico C defeated Keytesville 100 – 70 for their first win of the day.
Round 7 saw a pair of matchups for NCMC and District foes Mexico and Kirksville.
Mexico A slid past Kirksville A 490 – 95 while Mexico B defeated Kirksville B 160 – 90. Mexico C completed the perfect round for Mexico as they defeated Owensville 140 – 65.
Round 8 saw the first challenge for Mexico A, as they trailed Hermann A at the half 170 – 140.
But the second half was the Camden show, as he powered 5 while getting 4 gets in the final 10 questions leading Mexico A to the 500 – 205 win. Mexico B defeated Moberly 180 – 120 and Mexico C lost a close one to Palmyra 140 – 90.
Round 9 was another nail-biter for Mexico A, as they entered the best of 3 final for the championship against Hallsville.
Mexico A trailed at the half 155 – 130, and saw their second half deficit grow to 295 – 240 with 3 tossups left.
But senior Christian Frederickson and Camden Williams combined to get the final 3 tossups, leading Mexico back on top for a 330 – 295 final.
This was their 99th consecutive victory, and had them one win away from claiming another tournament championship.
Mexico B and Mexico C both ended their tournament with good wins, as Mexico B defeated Hannibal A 205 – 100 and Mexico C defeated Hannibal B 120 – 50.
Mexico A and Hallsville went right back at it for Round 10, as the game 2 of the best of 3 championship… Mexico A with a 1 – 0 lead.
And unlike Round 9, Mexico A hit the ground running and never looked back.
Camden Williams and Christian Frederickson again worked together to get the first 9 tossups of the game (5 powers), building a 315 – 0 lead before Hallsville got tossup 10 to end the half.
Mexico A cruised to a 555 – 100 win… their 100th consecutive victory, and bringing home yet another tournament championship.
Mexico A will get a weekend off next weekend before making a trip to Nevada, Missouri where they match up with 24th ranked Northmont A from Ohio.
