Mexico High School varsity boys and girls teams opened up their season on Saturday night as the final two games of the Gary Filbert Classic in Mexico.
The girls, under former Bulldog, and third year Head Coach Mackenzie Mudd, fell 58-33 to Sedalia Smith Cotton. The Lady Bulldogs came out running and led the game midway through the fist quarter, but Breckyn Scanlon hit for seven of her game high 23 to lead the Tigers to a 16-15 edge after one quarter.
After Sedalia settled down defensively, the Bulldogs struggled to pass the ball against the Smith-Cotton pressure which turned into a large number of turnovers.
It was 32-23 after one half of play and Sedalia widened the gap to 46-25 after three.
Mexico was led by Alyssa Miller, who scored all 11 of her points in the first half. Payton Shaw chipped in 8.
The boys action was also very fast-paced as the teams traded leads throughout the game, with the biggest lead being six by Mexico in the first half. It was 34-30 MHS at the break.
Mexico led by six again midway through the fourth when Max Lyles hit a three-pointer to bring the Tigers to within three. Former Mexico Coach, and now Sedalia Coach, Brennan Scanlon quickly called a timeout. He then implemented a full-court press that caused a Mexico turnover on the inbound, resulting in a Demarcus Sims-Boggs three that tied the game.
Smith-Cotton was then able to open up a four-point lead late in the 4th quarter. Mexico’s Charlie Fisher hit a three-quarter court shot at the buzzer to trim the final score to a one-point lead. Fischer led all scorers with 24. Kaden Benne hit for 18 points
Lyles led Sedalia with 17, Dax Wiskur added 15.
