Mexico Boys win Montgomery County Invitational
Clopton girls win, Mexico girls take fourth
The Mexico boys basketball team was the #1 seed in the Montgomery County Invitational Tournament, and they played like it. Fresh off easy wins in rounds one and two, the Bulldogs faced the upstart, and hometown, #6-seeded Montgomery County Wildcats. It was the third straight year the two had faced off for the tourney championship.
Mexico opened with an 11-0 run and never looked back as they led after one quarter, 22-11 and 36-21 at half. A dominant third frame, where the Dawgs outscored the Wildcats 28-12, put the game out of reach. The Final: Mexico 75, Montgomery County 44.
Mexico had four players in double digits, led by all-tournament team member Charlie Fisher with 16, Tournament MVP Kaden Benne added 14, Kinser Groves had 13 and James Matthews chipped in 10 points.
Jackson Benney led MOCO with 15 points. All-tournament team member Adrian Combs was held to just 9 points.
Mexico improved to 3-1 with the win and face Marshall in a JV/V quad at home to open up NCMC play on Tuesday. Montgomery fell to 2-1 and travels to Southern Boone on Tuesday.
Bowling Green hung on to beat Fulton, 65-62 in the third place game.
Clopton claimed the girls championship with a solid 63-34 win over Fatima. The Lady Hawks used a stifling defense to claim the win. The Spoonster girls led Clopton to the win.
Mexico girls lost to Hermann 75-57 in the third place game. The Lady Dawgs took a gut shot in the first quarter, trailing 25-6, and never recovered. MHS closed to within 10 in the third and had three straight possessions to try to whittle the lead to single digits but came up empty.
The game was closely officiated and four Mexico players fouled out; Charleigh Douglas, Scotty Smith, and Grace Hudson. Two Hermann players also fouled out, Andrea VanBooven and Maddy Yates.
Mexico’s Alyssa Miller had 27 to lead all scorers, and Hudson added 11. The Lady Bearcats were led by 26 from Kealie Lane, 14 from Yates, 12 from Brynlee Ash and VanBooven mustered 10. They face Blair Oaks Monday night.
