MLK Day activities in Mexico, Columbia

The Mexico Community Celebration of Martin Luther King Jr starts this morning. Jaye Jackson, the chairman of the group, says she is excited about the groups plans for MLK Day.  Activities began last night with a Welcome Event at the Presbyterian Church in Mexico.

Participants set to gather this morning at the Mexico United Methodist Church beginning at 9:30am for a Unity Breakfast with song, food and words of encouragement. The group will walk to the Audrain County Courthouse at 11:30am, for a noon-time service.

The Rev T.L. Garner will lead the service with many area dignitaries to speak. Jackson says this is the part of the day that really inspires her.

Jackson adds that Dr. King’s creed of service, unity and action is what drives the group.

Meanwhile, Columbia Parks and Recreation Department will hold the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Candlelight Walk and Memorial Celebration tonight.

The candlelight walk will start at 6:30 p.m. at the Armory Sports Center, 701 E. Ash. Participants should meet in the basement of the facility; the lower level entrance is at the back of the building. The walk will then proceed to St. Luke United Methodist Church, 204 E. Ash St., for the memorial celebration at 7 p.m.

Participants will celebrate and reflect on the life and contributions of Dr. King.
