The Jefferson City Fire Department responded around 3:15 this morning to a house fire in the 200 block of East Atchison Street.
A Cole County EMS crew spotted smoke coming from the home while returning from another call and began evacuating people inside.
Firefighters quickly knocked down the flames, but the single-story home suffered heavy fire and smoke damage.
No injuries were reported, but four adults, a child, and a pet were displaced and are being helped by the American Red Cross.
The fire appears to be accidental, and investigators are reminding everyone to check their smoke detectors.
