Columbia School Board Updates Weapons Policy to Meet State Requirements

The Columbia School Board has approved an updated weapons policy in line with new state requirements.

The unanimous vote came during Monday night’s meeting.

The revised policy clarifies what weapons are banned on campus and the consequences for students who bring them.

Under Missouri’s Safe Schools Act, students with firearms, explosives, or similar weapons face at least a year’s suspension or possible expulsion and will be reported to law enforcement.

The update also adds “other prohibited weapons,” like pocketknives, pepper spray, or toy guns that look real.

Schools must now report any credible weapon-related threats to the state Department of Education.
