Columbia Police Report Scam

The Columbia Police Department is continuing to receive calls about an IRS phone scam.

The caller impersonates an employee of the IRS, telling the person who answered they are in danger of a lawsuit or warrant for their arrest before attempting to gain personal information from the victim.

The police recommend never giving out person information including credit card numbers, birth dates or social security numbers.

If resident call back the number that just called and a recording is received with the name of a different company it is a scam.

Make a phone call to verify the information, and if something doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t.
