The planning for the upcoming bicentennial celebration in Louisiana is still underway, and the most recent event is a beard growing contest.
The event is in honor of two Pike County residents, Valentine Tapley and Elijah Gates. Tapley famously vowed to never trim his beard again if Abraham Lincoln won the 1860 election. Gates joined Tapley in his plight.
Tapley made good on his promise, and his beard grew to 12 feet, and Gates grew to 9 and a half feet.
The bicentennial celebration takes place in July.
