Boone County Sheriff’s Office Reports Scam

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office reports they have received phone calls from outside of the state reporting a scam where the caller identifies themselves as a deputy asking for money to post bond for a jailed and injured relative.

According to the sheriff’s office, the suspect has been able to manipulate the citizen’s caller ID to make it appear the call is from the department’s main phone number. This process is known as spoofing.

There have been no reports of anyone being scammed out of money, and reminds residents the sheriff’s office will never contact citizens by phone asking for money for any reason.
