A deadline to file a bill to approve the sale of SSM hospitals in Jefferson City and Mexico to MU Health Care this year has expired.
Under Missouri House and Senate rules, lawmakers had until Friday last week to file bills.
In an email statement provided to the Columbia Daily Tribune, MU Health Care spokeswoman Jesslyn Chew said negotiations are progressing positively, but the parties chose not to seek enabling legislation in the 2019 legislative session.
SSM Health signed a letter of intent with MU Health Care in August for the sale of the SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Jefferson City and SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital-Audrain in Mexico.
In Audrain County a group has been formed to support the sale, however in Jefferson an opposition group hired a lobbyist to oppose any legislation sanctioning the transaction.
Before the sale can be finalized SSM and MU Health Care need federal and state approval.
