Marshals Warn Of Phone Scam

The U.S. Marshals in the Western District of Missouri are alerting the public of an impostor phone scam where the perpetrators are spoofing official phone numbers to trick people into sending money.

The tactic involves scammers using technology to modify what appears on the victim’s caller I.D.

The Marshals are urging people to report these calls to their local FBI office and file a consumer complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.

Scammers use many tactics to sound credible including providing badge numbers, names of actual law enforcement officials and judges and give courthouse addresses.
