Mexico Animal Shelter Numbers Broken Down

The Mexico City Council heard an update on Monday regarding numbers at the animal shelter, and KXEO has more details.

During her report, Community Development Director Rita Jackson said 796 animals have been impounded since October 1. Of those, 408 have been adopted and 66 were returned to owners.

City Manager Bruce Slagle provided more information on what happened to the 322 that were not accounted for in the report.

He says 234 cats have died and 12 remain in shelter. Eighty seven trapped or feral cats and seventy seven cats that were sick have been humanely euthanized. Ten died in shelter, and 56 kittens had no nursing mother.

Thirty three dogs were euthanized for being aggressive or dangerous, and eight were sick. Five of the dogs were brought in after being hit by a car and twelve bit people. Two have died while in shelter and 16 are still being housed.

Slagle says the animal shelter does not put down animals that are not sick, hurt or dangerous, and will keep them until someone will give them a good home.
