The St. Louis Post Dispatch reported the news on Saturday night.

The Cardinals sent out a tweet in support of Gibson, saying get well soon, Bob. All of Cardinals nation is behind you.

The 83 year old Gibson, received the diagnosis several weeks ago.

He is hospitalized in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska according to his agent.

The Royals get minor league infielder Kevin Merrel.

More deals are likely on the way for the rebuilding Royals.

Billy Hamilton, Jake Diekman, Martin Maldonado, Wily Peralta, and Lucas Duda all have expiring contracts with the club.

The trade deadline is July 31st.
