Saturday Morning Sports Report

The Mexico High School varsity basketball teams took a conference double-header from Moberly last (Friday) night.

The girls started off the Senior Night celebration with a come from behind 47-43 win over Moberly. The victory improved Mexico to 15-8 and 7-2 in the North Central Missouri Conference. The Lady Bulldogs were powered by senior Mya Miller, who finished with 24 points, and senior Riley Thurman, who added 12. The Moberly girls fell to 17-7, and 7-2 in the league.

On the boys side, it was a couple of underclassmen that led Mexico to their 23rd win of the season. Trailing late in the first, junior guard Jordan Shelton hit a big three to give the Bulldogs a 15-14 lead and they never looked back. Shelton led the team with 24 points, while sophomore guard DJ Long added 21. Senior Isaiah Reams also had 12 for the Bulldogs in their 75-45 win.

Mexico is now 23-0 and 9-0 in the NCMC. Moberly fell to 9-15 and 3-6 in conference. They were led by a game high 26 points from senior guard Jaisten Payne.

 

Four of the five Mexico grapplers competing at state live on to battle another day.

Keith Ransom will wrestle in the championship finals tomorrow (Saturday) night.

Dylan Mosley, Ricky Juarez and Grant Van Horn lost their semifinal matches and will wrestle in the 4th round wrestlebacks tomorrow (Saturday).

Katie Bowen, the lone female contender for Mexico, lost in the bloodround by decision, ending the sophomore’s season.

 

The Mizzou Tigers men’s basketball team dropped the first of back-to-back games against Mississippi State last (Friday) night, 68-49 in Starkville.

Ronnie DeGray, III lead the Tigers with 13 points, 5 rebounds and a steal.

Javon Pickett contributed 11 points including a pair of three-pointers.

The Tigers look for revenge as the Bulldogs come to Columbia tomorrow (Sunday) night, tip off is at 7:00.

 

The Blues head north of the border tonight to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Blues have won 6 out of the last 10 games while the Maple Leafs have won 8 of their last 10 games.

Puck drops tonight at Scotiabank Arena at 7:00
