Mexico High School Academic Team Claims Third At State To End Historic Season

The Mexico High School Academic Team put up a third place finish in the State Tournament on Saturday, May 6, 2023 in Columbia.

It was the first State Tournament in school history for the MHS Academic Team as they competed against other class 5 schools: Sullivan, Ladue, and Savannah.

Mexico head coach Dale Schenewerk says the team overcame some early jitters to finish the tournament strong.

In Game 1 Sullivan won 390-310.

Camden Williams led the way with 80 points while senior Captain Jamison Jeffries pitched in with 10 points.

Game 2 saw the eventual Class 5 champions Ladue win 450-280 over Mexico.

Game 3 the Bulldogs rebounded and beat Savannah 590-90.

Camden Williams played an exceptional game taking 18 out of the 22 toss-ups for 180 points while senior Declan Gleeson got on the board with 10.

Mexico and Savannah then played in the 3rd place match up.

The Bulldogs cruised to a 460-170 victory.

Camden Williams had 110 points.

Dylan Reid put up 20 and Declan Gleeson ended his regular season career with 10 more points.

Coach Schenewerk says his team was the youngest in the tournament, and learned a lot with a solid foundation returning that has them ready to return to state and leave next year with the Championship.

Next up for the Bulldogs is the 2023 PACE National Scholastic Competition in Chicago, June 10-11.
