Mexico High School Academic Team Shows Off Skills In Columbia

The Mexico High School Academic Team brought home a second place finish at the Mizzou Fall Academic Tournament on Saturday, October 28, 2023.

The Bulldogs were the top seed of the 24 team tournament.

Mexico head coach Dale Schenewerk says “Through the first 5 rounds, the A-Team (led by junior captain Camden Williams, senior Liam Hoyle and juniors Lucy Gleeson and Dylan Reid) went 5 – 0 averaging 458 points per game.

The B-team escaped the first 5 rounds with a record of 3 – 2, making the championship bracket for the first time.

The C team went 2 – 3 while the D-team went 3 – 2.

No Mexico team ended at the bottom of their pool.Junior Camden Williams was the tournament’s top scorer through the preliminary rounds with 163 points per game and 40 powers (the next best was 11 powers).

Junior Carter Blackburn cracked the top 10 again (tied for 9th) with 42 points per game.The A-Team took down Bayless (445 – 130) and the B-Team 485 – 50 before suffering their first loss of the season, a 375-300 defeat to Lindbergh A.

They would rebound and take down College Heights Christian 445 – 120 and Hickman 405 – 110, setting up a rematch with Lindbergh A for the finals.Unfortunately, Lindbergh proved to be up for the challenge, clinching their win over the Bulldogs on the final tossup of the game.

Williams scored 85 points in the final match while Gleeson scored 10.The B-team took 8th out of the 22 team field (going 3 – 7) while Mexico D (5 – 5) and C (3 – 7) tied for 14th place.”

Up next the Bulldogs have their third tournament in three weeks this coming Saturday, going to Washington University for The Washington University Fall Academic Tournament, where they will face Lindbergh, Ladue, Parkway West and a team out of Detroit, Michigan.
