Charges Filed Against Mexico Man Accused In Shooting Death Of His Brother

The Audrain County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has filed charges in a case against a Mexico, Missouri man who is accused of shooting and killing his brother in May.

30-year-old Stephen Welch, was charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon on Friday, June 28, 2024.

Mexico Public Safety Chief Brice Mesko told KXEO news that Welch had not been arrested as of Friday night.

However, he would likely be arrested soon.

According to previous reporting Mexico Public Safety responded to the 700 block of East Promenade during the evening hours of May 19th in reference to someone being shot.

Responding officers found that several people at the home were involved in an altercation, when 30-year-old Stephen L. Welch, shot and killed his brother 36-year-old Christopher S. Welch.

According to online court records, witnesses allegedly told police that Stephen Welch shot Christopher Welch.

One witness allegedly told police that Christopher Welch was holding a knife and threatened to kill Stephen Welch and the witness.

Christopher Welch allegedly took a step toward Stephen Welch while threatening to kill him and Stephen Welch told law enforcement that he shot Christopher until the gun was empty, the statement says.

He allegedly told police that he was trained in the Marines to shoot that way.

Stephen Welch claimed he was about seven feet away from Christopher, according to the probable cause statement.
