Hermann area winery destroyed by fire

An early morning structure fire heavily damaged a winery in Gasconade County Sunday.

Firefighters were sent to the Wenwood Winery in Bay, Mo., at 1:20 a.m. for a structure fire on Highway K.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to find half of the 15,000-square-foot building already afire.

Because of the size of the fire, the temperature, and the distance to the closest reliable fire hydrant, the fire was eventually upgraded to a four-alarm fire.

It took two-and-half hours to bring the blaze under control and crews were on scene until 7 a.m.

The building was considered a total loss.

The Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
