Boone County Grand Jury Upgrades Murder Charges in Clark Lane Shooting

A Boone County grand jury has upgraded the charges against James Lamont Caldwell Jr., 24, in a January deadly shooting at The Greens apartment complex on Clark Lane.

Caldwell now faces first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, and three counts of armed criminal action in the Jan. 4 incident that left 21-year-old Brianna N. Hawkins of Fulton dead and two others critically injured.

He is set to be arraigned on the new charges at 1:30 p.m. February 23 at the Boone County Courthouse.

Police say video shows a person chasing another while gunfire erupts, and witnesses identified Caldwell as responsible.

Caldwell was taken into custody at the scene; he reportedly told investigators he didn’t remember the events and had taken Xanax.

The district attorney’s office had initially charged Caldwell with second-degree murder. The grand jury’s indictment upgrades those charges.
