Columbia Schools Weigh Stronger Bullying Policy

Columbia Public Schools could soon make major changes to its bullying policy.

The district’s policy committee met Wednesday night to review updates that would require that all school employees, substitutes, and volunteers would be expected to intervene to prevent student bullying, and report the incident to the building principal or designee according to the proposed revisions.

Committee chair Paul Harper says the proposal is the result of months of work to better protect students.

The revisions would also expand how the district handles off-campus and online bullying, allowing action when behavior disrupts the school environment.

The policy updates could be finalized by the end of the month.
