Jefferson City Man Indicted in February Police Shootout

A Cole County grand jury has indicted a man accused of exchanging gunfire with Jefferson City police in February.

Forty-year-old Joey Hampton faces charges including two counts of first-degree assault on a special victim, unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Officers say Hampton fired shots at them on Broadway Street on February 26 when they tried to make contact during an investigation into illegal drug sales.

Police returned fire, and Hampton was later taken into custody. He remains in the Cole County Jail.
