A jury began Monday for a woman accused in a deadly 2025 shooting in Holts Summit.
Heather Smith faces charges including second-degree murder in the death of 38-year-old Kara Dills.
Prosecutors say Smith deliberately fired the fatal shot during an argument outside an apartment complex last April.
Court documents claim Dills had a gun and struck Smith before the shooting, but the state argues Smith paused, aimed, and fired as Dills walked away.
Testimony Monday described the scene as highly emotional, and investigators say the weapon was later found hidden in Smith’s apartment.
The trial continues today in Boone County and is expected to wrap up later this week.
