Columbia Fire Upgrades Hazmat Detection with New Monitors

The Columbia Fire Department is upgrading its hazardous materials response with new detection equipment.

Two AreaRAE monitors were purchased through a $42,000 grant from the Missouri Department of Public Safety, replacing older units that could no longer be repaired.

The devices can detect toxic and combustible gases, radiation, and changing atmospheric conditions in real time.

Assistant Chief Lester Shewmake says the monitors are especially useful at large public gatherings, helping crews track wind, temperature, and potential airborne threats.

The department now has four AreaRAE units, all currently in service.
