Seven people, including five children, were displaced after a duplex fire in Jefferson City Wednesday evening.
Firefighters responded just before 6:40 p.m. to the 1000 block of Elizabeth Street, where smoke was seen coming from a two-story duplex.
All residents had safely evacuated before crews arrived.
Firefighters quickly extinguished a kitchen fire in the upper apartment and rescued two cats from the home. No injuries were reported.
The upper apartment suffered moderate fire damage, while the lower unit sustained minor smoke and water damage.
The cause remains under investigation, but officials say preliminary findings indicate the fire was accidental.
The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents with temporary housing and support services.
