The St. Louis Cardinals fell to the Kansas City Royals 14-6 last night at Kauffman Stadium in an explosive KC’ offensive display that featured multiple franchise milestones.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning off an RBI fielder’s choice from Jordan Walker and a sacrifice fly from Alec Burleson.
However, the Royals immediately responded in the bottom half of the frame with a 419-foot solo home run by Bobby Witt Jr.
The game broke wide open in the bottom of the second inning. The Royals erupted for six runs on a franchise-record five doubles in a single inning, chasing Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore from the mound.
Kansas City added four more runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a 402-foot, two-run blast from rookie Jac Caglianone, extending their lead to 11-3.
St. Louis attempted a brief comeback by scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth and two more in the seventh, but the Royals’ offense proved insurmountable.
Salvador Perez hit his 10th home run of the season in the sixth inning.
It marked his 137th career home run at Kauffman Stadium, officially breaking the franchise record for the most home runs hit at the ballpark
Bobby Witt Jr. had a massive night early, hitting a solo home run in the first and an RBI single in the second.
However, he was removed in the fourth inning due to a sore right knee after making a sliding defensive play.
Royals starter Noah Cameron (4-4) earned the win, grinding through five innings and allowing four runs (three earned).
Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore (3-4) took the loss after being shelled for seven runs in just 1 2/3 innings.
