The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Kansas City Royals 12-10 yesterday afternoon to avoid a series sweep in an absolute slugfest at Kauffman Stadium

The Cardinals jumped out to a massive early lead, scoring five runs in the first inning highlighted by a Masyn Winn three-run homer, and adding four more in the second behind a JJ Wetherholt two-run shot to take an early 9-2 lead.

The Royals refused to go quietly, putting together a furious rally with two-run home runs from Nick Loftin and Jac Caglianone to close the gap to 9-6 by the end of the second inning.

An Iván Herrera three-run blast in the fifth extended the Cardinals’ lead to 12-7.

Kansas City continually chipped away, bringing the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth after Caglianone hit his second home run of the game.

Cardinals reliever Stephen O’Brien ultimately shut down the threat, striking out John Rave and forcing an Isaac Collins groundout to preserve the 12-10 victory.
