MU Receives $1M NIH Grant for Cancer Research

The University of Missouri School of Medicine has received a one-million-dollar NIH grant to advance research into a faster form of radiation treatment for cancer.

The funding will give researchers access to the TheryQ FLASHKNiFE system, which delivers radiation in ultra-fast doses.

Preclinical studies suggest the approach could target tumors while reducing damage to nearby healthy tissue.

Researchers say more work is needed to understand how the technology affects tumors and to balance potential side effects.

The equipment could be installed within the next year, with clinical trials potentially beginning in three to four years.

FDA clearance would be required before the treatment could be widely used on patients.
