New School Bus Law Takes Effect
A new Missouri law is increasing penalties for drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses. The law takes effect August 28, just as the new school year gets underway.
Drivers who fail to stop will now receive five points on their license. Fines also increase, starting at $500 for a first offense and reaching up to $3,000 for repeat violations, along with possible license suspensions.
Penalties are even more serious if a child is injured. Causing physical injury can result in a felony and up to four years in prison, while serious injury can mean up to seven years.
Drivers should slow down when a bus flashes yellow lights and stop when red lights and the stop arm are activated.
