Boone County Seeks $1.9 Million for Jail Housing
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office is asking county leaders for 1.9 million dollars to pay for housing detainees in other county jails.
Sheriff Dwayne Carey says the department has run out of money for out-of-county housing as the Boone County Jail continues to face overcrowding.
Carey says the department saw about 600 additional bookings after the Columbia Police Department hired 24 officers between fall 2024 and 2025.
The Boone County Commission held its first reading Thursday on the proposed funding request. Carey says the money would cover the cost of housing detainees through the end of the year.
