Columbia Superintendent Sends Letters to Staff, Parents

Superintendent of Columbia Public Schools, Peter Steipleman, sent a letter to parents addressing the deadly school shooting in Florida yesterday.

In the letter, Steipleman discusses the drills the administration, staff, teachers and students all participate in that include training in how to barricade, evade and escape in an active intruder situation. He went on to say the school system has a strong partnership with local law enforcement agencies and emergency responders.

In a separate letter to the faculty and staff, he says it is critically important to report anything suspicious or concerning so the schools can intervene and investigate, and to encourage students to do the same. He reminded staff they have permission to do what is right for their safety, as well as the students.

Columbia Public Schools are part of the Boone County Schools Mental Health Coalition.
