Missouri Prisons Smoke Free

Missouri prisons are now smoke free.

Staff, offenders and visitors are no longer permitted to light up inside the facility.

Staff and visitors will still be allowed to smoke in designated areas outside the prison.

The change in the prison system comes after asthmatic murderer, Ecclesiastical Denzel Washington sued the Department of Corrections for effects he suffers from secondhand smoke.

A federal jury ruled last year it was cruel and unusual punishment to pair an inmate with asthma with a smoker.

Staff can receive free smoking cessation products, educational materials and classes through their health care plans.
