Sheriff’s Association Disputes Auditor Reports
The Missouri Sheriff’s Association says Missouri Auditor made a rush to judgment in her report that raised concerns about the oversight of sex offenders in the state.
The report released last week alleged the whereabouts of nearly 1,300 sex offenders are unknown.
Sheriff’s Association Executive Director Kevin Merritt said today [Monday] some of the offenders cited as unaccounted for are actually in prison, have died, moved out of state or are under investigation for non-compliance.
The auditors office said Merritt’s response makes it clear that some sheriff’s have not regularly updated the information for the registry.
