A Vandalia man with life threatening injuries after a three vehicle crash at Mile Marker 124 on Westbound I-70 in Columbia yesterday (Thursday) afternoon.
Police say it happened when a vehicle driven by 86 year old William McDowell of Vandalia was in the merging lane from the Stadium/I-70 on ramp and attempted to use the cross-median emergency U-turn by crossing both the driving and passing lanes.
Another vehicle collided with McDowell’s vehicle, causing it to spin and collide with a freight liner.
McDowell suffered life threatening injuries, and minor injuries were reported to the drivers of the other vehicles.
It is not believed that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the accident, the cause of the crash is under investigation.
