Ashcroft Rejects Third Abortion Bill Referendum

Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft has rejected a third referendum to Missouri’s new abortion law today. [Tuesday]

In a news release, Ashcroft’s office reports the referendum failed to comply with the Missouri Constittion.

Governor Mike Parson signed House Bill 126 on May 24 which included an “emergency clause” making a portion of the law effective on that date.

The American Civil Liberties Union and GOP donor David Humphreys have filed lawsuits to determine if Ashcroft has overstepped his authority by quashing the referendums.

The ACLU and Humphreys are seeking to put the portion of the abortion bill not already in affect on a Missouri ballot.
